Polytechnic diplomas for international students in Singapore
How international-qualification holders apply to a polytechnic’s full-time diploma through the Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE), using the Ngee Ann and Singapore Polytechnic pages as examples: application windows, entrance tests, medical requirements, the Tuition Grant and its three-year bond, the Student’s Pass and living costs.
Verified 2026-11-03 Changes often
An international student applies to a polytechnic by approaching the institution directly. Application windows are published by institution and by qualification type, and they often close months before the year you want to start. This article follows the official pages of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP) as of 3 November 2026. For any other polytechnic, read its own site.
Who this is for
- Students with an overseas secondary qualification who want a diploma of about three years. The diploma is applied: graduates can work, or continue to a degree.
- NP’s page says the DAE exists for applicants whose qualification types are not eligible under the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) and the Joint Polytechnic Admissions Exercise (JPAE). International qualifications fall into this group.
- For degrees see Universities and higher education in Singapore; for the whole system see Singapore’s education system at a glance.

Steps
- Open the polytechnic’s international-qualification page and check your qualification is listed, with its minimum entry requirement and the course requirements.
- Note the application window for your qualification. NP’s window for most international qualifications closed on 30 October 2026, so a student aiming for the 2027 intake must use another window or confirm next year’s dates.
- Apply on the DAE portal and upload your documents. NP asks for a notarised English translation if a document is not in English.
- If invited, sit the entrance test. NP publishes the syllabus and sample papers.
- After an offer, apply for the Student’s Pass and the medical examination, and complete the Tuition Grant steps in the school’s enrolment process.
- For housing, SP says full-time diploma international students without family in Singapore may apply for campus accommodation, but vacancies are limited and approval is based on need.
Costs and timing
- Tuition for the 2026 intake, with the Tuition Grant: at all five polytechnics read, non-ASEAN international students pay S$13,600 tuition and ASEAN international students S$12,400. The total payable for a non-ASEAN student, with other fees and GST, differs slightly: NP S$13,758 (S$13,726.40 for nursing; as of 19 Jan 2026), SP S$13,767.99 (as of 7 May 2026), Temasek S$13,773.65 (April 2026 intake), Republic S$13,777, and Nanyang S$13,778.59 (as of 14 May 2026). Details from two of them: SP’s table (as of 7 May 2026) lists S$13,600 a year for a non-ASEAN international student, S$13,767.99 payable in total, and S$12,400 tuition (S$12,567.99 payable) for ASEAN students. The totals include 9% GST and other fees. NP’s table (as of 19 Jan 2026) lists S$13,758 payable for non-ASEAN international students on non-nursing courses and S$13,726.40 on the nursing course, also GST-inclusive.
- SP says tuition stays fixed for the whole course for a given entry year, other fees may change, and fees are paid in two instalments with the first due before enrolment.
- A student who rejects or does not sign the Tuition Grant agreement pays full fees. The two pages do not state the full amount, so none is given here. Other course types (nursing, foundation programmes) and ITE were not checked; confirm on each school’s page.
- SP’s reference for living costs is about S$1,400 a month and S$18,350 a year, including rent, food and transport. Off campus it suggests a deposit of about S$1,000 and rent of about S$500 per person a month for a shared room. These are the school’s estimates, not official fixed amounts.
- The Tuition Grant carries a 3-year bond; MOE’s page has the terms. For comparisons see What studying in Singapore costs.
ITE (Institute of Technical Education)
- ITE’s page for applicants with other qualifications says it will not admit international students with foreign or private qualifications to its full-time courses. The page is titled for the 2026 intake and shows conflicting update dates, so confirm with ITE.
- MOE’s early admissions page (updated 7 May 2026) says international students in government, government-aided and independent schools who sit the N-Level or O-Level in the application year can apply to the ITE Early Admissions Exercise.
- So a student coming from overseas has no direct ITE route at present; the polytechnic route is above.
Common mistakes
- Treating the joint exercises as open to international qualifications: NP places them in the DAE.
- Using last year’s window: NP’s main international window for the 2027 intake ended on 30 October 2026.
- Treating the medical requirement as a formality: NP says a student who does not meet it cannot continue on the course.
- Treating the grant as free money: it comes with a 3-year bond.

- Confirm windows and minimum entry requirements on each polytechnic’s own page.
FAQ
Can international students apply to a polytechnic directly?
Yes. Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s page says holders of international qualifications, including returning Singaporeans, can apply for full-time diplomas through its Direct Admissions Exercise (DAE), provided they meet the minimum entry requirements for their qualification. Each polytechnic runs its own process, so check each one.
Which qualification can a student from China use?
Ngee Ann’s list of international qualifications includes China, alongside IGCSE, the IB Diploma, Malaysia, India, Vietnam and others. The minimum grades are in a table on that page and differ by qualification. This article did not check them one by one, so read the page itself.
Do I have to sit an entrance test?
Ngee Ann says applicants who meet the minimum requirements and the course requirements may be shortlisted for its entrance test, held in late January or early February 2027. Only holders of IGCSE, IB Diploma Year 12, Malaysia SPM, Malaysia UEC or Brunei Cambridge GCE O-Level are exempt.
What does a polytechnic diploma cost an international student per year?
The five polytechnics read (SP, NP, Nanyang, Temasek, Republic) show the same tuition for the 2026 intake: for a non-ASEAN international student who takes the Tuition Grant, S$13,600 a year, and with other fees and GST the total payable is about S$13,758 to S$13,779 depending on the school. ASEAN international students pay S$12,400 tuition. A student who rejects or does not sign the Tuition Grant agreement pays full fees.
Is the Tuition Grant the same at a polytechnic as at a university?
MOE says the grant covers selected full-time diploma and undergraduate courses at polytechnics, ITE, arts institutions and autonomous universities, and international students can receive it. Permanent Residents and international students serve a 3-year bond after graduation. Singapore Polytechnic says the grant lasts up to 10 semesters.
Can an international student go to ITE?
Not with an overseas qualification. ITE’s page says it will not admit international students with foreign or private qualifications to its full-time courses; that page is for the 2026 intake and its update dates conflict, so confirm with ITE. The other route is early admission: MOE’s page says international students in government, government-aided and independent schools who sit the N-Level or O-Level in the application year can apply.
Can a diploma student work part time?
Singapore Polytechnic’s page says full-time diploma students may work part time for up to 16 hours a week during the school term. Other institutions and course types may differ, so confirm with the school and ICA.
